Even national heroes have close calls on the roads. Imagine being the fool who took out Anna Meares? Fortunately the legend of Aussie track cycling lives to ride another day.
Instead, some fool driving a Toyota Hilux took out a 50yo who was riding over Mt Dandenong on Saturday morning, simply by failing to giveway when exiting a driveway.
I would like to see all of our professional cyclists making similar comments as Anna did, and be very vocal about it. Politicians don’t seem to realise just how unpleasent some drivers make it for people who ride. Drivers don’t show the same disdain for other motorists, or pedestrians or motorcyclists. They tollerate these other road users much better.
Why is it about a person on a bicycle makes them fair game?
We need a cultural change in this country, and the people who have the power to make that change are first the media, and then the politicians.
Until the media expose just how intimidating some drivers can be, for no other reason that because the person was on a bicycle, politicians have no pressure to change the status quo.

How does a Toyota Hilux pull out of a driveway by itself?
Why is it any more significant that a person such as Anna Meares might be killed?
When will we start culling drivers?
James, who said it’s more significant if a person such as Anna Meares might be killed? My point is that it can happen to anyone.
I’m glad that’s what you meant.
