I use Shimano pedals. No particular reason other than that’s what my first road bike came with, and inertia is a powerful force. I’ve been told on many an occasion I should try switching to Speedplay, which may well be good advice. But after touching down at the Tour Down Under in Adelaide last week, I’m very pleased I didn’t listen to them. For as I discovered, the wider platform offered by Shimano pedals is ideal for commuting with your sneakers when your road bike is the only form of transport available.
As my riding mate, Russell, bemoaned as we travelled about 3km in civvies to watch the local Norwood criteriums last Wednesday night, Speedplays don’t give you much of a solid base to get the power down when your cycling shoes are elsewhere.
