Now here’s a great little tale.
The Fijians did it tough in the 100-kilometre road team trial at the 1982 Commonwealth Games. While most contestants arrived with the latest sophisticated bikes to take up their start positions in Brisbane, the island team were a little more conventional in their approach.
They arrived with lights, bells, mudguards and pumps attached to their racing bikes! Well prepared, but perhaps a little overweight for the gruelling event. Mind you if the road race was in NSW the bell would have been rather handy…
Couldn’t find any footage of the time trial….road race is here though – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqYeZwzP0Ak
