The odds are stacked against him. But having been fortunate enough to spend an afternoon with Mr Evans just before Christmas in his home town of Barwon Heads, you wouldn’t put it past him. He’s fitter than he’s been for two and half years and rather motivated to make up for lost time. If he’s still in the mix in the final 20km, I’ll be cheering!

Well, he almost got there. What a great race. Three of this country’s finest cyclists on the podium together. Doesn’t get much better than that for a Nationals road race.
