Stopped in his tracks

In Stage 16, public transport did what the peloton has failed to do in 2013: stop Chris Froome.

Whilst the level crossing certainly helped the breakaway, it made no difference in the GC standings. That said, Bjarnie Ris is no doubt scouring the route maps for more train lines. It may be Saxo’s best chance of pegging back time.

Historically, there have been plenty of instances of trains stopping the Tour. However as these photos show, in days gone by not all riders adhered to the rules of the road, often brazenly scaling the barriers with their bikes over their shoulders, stealing a march on their more conservative rivals.
